The First Day of CollegeIt's a day of mixed emotions for parents. Time to begin letting go. Give your son or daughter the freedom they need. But reassure them that you will be there if they need you. Saying GoodbyeIf you're planning to take your son or daughter to college, respect their new boundaries. Help them move in. Share a meal. But remember to give them the space they need to get settled and begin meeting other students. Know What to ExpectConfirm which campus services and facilities will be available upon arrival. Will dorms and cafeterias be open? Internet connections ready? What about administrative offices and clinics? Find out in advance and prepare accordingly. Getting SettledFind out if there are rules for moving into dorms. It helps to know if there are elevators, dollies or carts you can use. Some parents step aside and let roommates, newfound friends or friends from home do all the work! Planning VisitsBe sure to discuss timing of visits home for holidays and significant events. Also note dates for parent's weekends and other campus activities. Think about reserving hotel rooms far in advance. Depending on the school's location, they can fill up fast.
